PREPOSITIONS

There are thousands and thousands of nouns verbs in English, but only about sixty prepositions.
Here are some of the most common.






Put in the correct preposition (choose in / on / at). If no preposition is need put in :
1) Lucy is arriving _____ February the 13th _____eight o'clock______the morning.
2) The weather is often terrible in London _____ January.

Put in the correct preposition:
1) He's swimming_______ the river.
2)Where's Julie? She's ______ school.
3) Stop worrying your ______ exam - everything will be fine.
4) I've waited _____ Judy for 30 minutes. I'm going home.

An adjective can come right in front of the noun it modifies :
  • America is a free country, and many brave people live here.

An adjective can come after a linking verb (like the verb to be).
  •  America is free, and her people are brave.

An adjective can even stand alone without the noun it is describing:
  •  America is the land of the free and the home of the brave.

In the short paragraph below, there are twenty nouns.


KINDS OF NOUNS



Countable nouns can be "counted", they have a singular and plural form .
For example:
  • A book, two books, three books .....
  • An apple, two apples, three apples ....
Uncountable nouns (also called mass nouns or noncount nouns) cannot be counted, they are not seperate objects. This means you cannot make them plural by adding -s, because they only have a singular form. It also means that they do not take a/an or a number in front of them.
For example:
  • Water
  • Work
  • Information
  • Coffee
  • Sand

Nouns that can be Countable and Uncountable

EXERCISE TIME

Fill in the blanks with the suitable Nouns given:
1. Jessica is a good______ (girl, boy, place).

2. Aunt Mary lives in a big______(house, car, table).

3. My father eats three sweet______(apple, water, salt).

Decide whether these nouns are countable (C) or uncountable (U):

HELPING VERBS.


There are 23 common helping verbs (sometimes called Auxiliary Verbs). They are not too hard to remember if you think of them like this:




A full verb phrase can have one, two, three, or four different verbs: one main verbs and up to three helping verb.
  • You go.
  • You have gone.
  • You will have gone.
  • You should have been going.


REGULAR AND IRREGULAR VERBS.

Most verbs in English are regular. To form the past tense of these, you just add –D or –ED.
  • Today it walks, last week it walked. It has always walked.
  • Today it dances. Last week it danced. It has always danced.

For irregular verbs, on the other hand, the past tense is formed in different ways. That is why they are called “irregular”. Here are some examples:
